With the proper practice of Naadi Shuddhi Pranayama, it is not just the adults who can cure their diseases, but even before the pregnancy, good health of the child can be ensured.

Before going deep into the subject let us learn what are the different types of Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama and their benefits.

Anuloma Viloma Pranayama OR Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama

Right nostril called surya nadi is connected with Sun and when you breath through the right nostril, closing the left nostril, it creates heat in the body. Conversely if while closing the right nostril, called Chandra Nadi if you breathe through left nostril, which is connected to the moon and will have a cooling effect.

So, for increasing heat in the body, close the left nostril and inhale through the right nostril, hold your breath, count up to four and then release through the left nostril. This is very beneficial in fighting the diseases like cold, flu, bronchitis etc wherein  heat is required.

To increase the coolness in the body, close the right nostril, inhale through the left nostril, hold the breath for a count of 4 and then release through the right nostril. This Pranayama is useful in conditions of fever, sunstroke or to beat the heat in summer.

And the third method is balancing of heat and cold. Here you have to inhale through the right nostril and exhale through the left and then inhale through the left and exhale through the right nostril.

But while doing this there are some more cares which  need to be taken to achieve further benefits. During the period the breath is held while inhaling, pull the stomach inside for more effective results as well as reducing the tummy. And while inhaling, chest should expand by 5 to 7 cms.

This Pranayama can be done sitting in a comfortable position  Else there is another method where if you lie down on the left side of your body, the air will flow from the right nostril leading to surya nadi pranayama where the body gets heated up. Generally this is the method in which one should lie down to achieve good digestion. Conversely when one is having fever, lying down on the right side will cool the body thereby reducing the fever.

How is Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama is linked to pregnancy and Childbirth?

In Ayurveda, it is claimed that a couple can have a child of desired sex by following certain methods. But before that, the couple has to ensure the following in order to get a healthy child.

The couple should drink one glass each of Gold/Silver/Copper/Iron charged water. ( This is done by boiling 4 glasses of water heated and reduced to 2 glasses in the required vessel ).

The lady must have 3 to 7 regular menses before conceiving. The total effect of these would be to get a fully developed healthy child with the possibility of its having hereditary problems reduced to the minimum.

Then if the following methods are followed, the couple will get a child of their desired sex :

  • 1.The day on which menses starts is to be considered as the first day.
  • 2. Intercourse is to be done on the days as mentioned below:

For getting a son : On the even dates, that is on 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th,12th or 14th day, the husband should lie with his wife on his left side for 15 minutes so that he would be breathing through his right nostril before intercourse.

For getting a daughter : On the odd dates, i.e. on 5th , 7th, 9th,11th, 13th or 15th day, the husband should lie with his wife on his right side so that he would be breathing with his left nostril before intercourse.

It has also been advised in Ayurveda that if the intercourse is made during later dates, i.e. from 10 th to 15 th dates, there is more possibility of conceiving and the child to be born will be more healthy.
